Liquid cooled gold integrating spheres for high power laser applications in the near to mid infrared (NIR and MIR) with exceptional power handling capability

These liquid cooled gold integrating spheres are designed for high power laser applications in the near to mid infrared (NIR and MIR). They provide exceptional power handling capability.

High power measurements are often performed using thermopile detectors. Thermopiles however, have the disadvantage of reacting very slowly – typical rise times lead to measurement periods of 1 second at best. The combination of an integrating sphere and a photodiode based power meter opens the possibility of measuring high power fluctuations on a µs time scale. This can be useful for setting up and debugging high power CW lasers.

These ulbricht spheres may be combined with our OPM150 or OPM500 series of power meters via fibre coupling. Just plug it in to your USB port and start measuring!

General Operation

What is an integrating sphere used for?
An integrating sphere measures total optical power independent of beam shape or direction, making it ideal for LEDs, laser diodes, and fiber outputs.

Why use an integrating sphere instead of a standard photodiode?
A photodiode measures only incident light at its surface, while an integrating sphere collects light from all directions, providing accurate total power measurement.

What coatings are used inside the gold integrating spheres?
Gold coatings are highly reflective diffuse materials optimized for the infrared.

What sizes of integrating spheres are available?
Integrating spheres are available in many diameters depending on application and power level. These sizes include 20mm, 25mm, 50mm, 65mm, 100mm 115mm, and 200mm diameter.

Can high-power lasers damage the sphere?
The maximum optical power depends on the size of the sphere and detector used. Limits for your configuration will be outlined in the documentation provided.

Could a part be provided for your integrating spheres to limit input apertures for varying sizes?
We can provide customised solutions to fit your requirements.

Do you offer recalibrations for your Integrating Spheres?
Yes, we do. Periodic calibration is recommended to maintain measurement accuracy.

Can you measure larger ranges than what is listed in your brochure?
Multiple photodetectors can be connected to the sphere at the same time allowing for great flexibility in what each sphere can measure.

How do I align a beam into an integrating sphere?
Alignment is generally not critical since the sphere diffuses incoming light.

Can integrating spheres measure LEDs?
They are widely used for LED power and luminous flux measurements.

Can multiple ports be used simultaneously?
Integrating spheres often have multiple ports for detectors, sources, and monitoring equipment.
